A ghost is a disincarnate soul, such as that of a human, or animal.
Ghosts are believed to be "trapped" souls who haunt physical locations. Ghosts are sometimes called "poltergeists", which basicly means mischievous spirit, however most poltergeist activity can be attributed to the psychokinetic energy of the humans who dwell within the area.

A ghost is sometimes interchangable with a spirit, although that can be used to distinguish between ghosts and some other type of sentient being.
