An ouija board (pronounced wee-jah), alternatly called witch board, is a simple device used to communicate with spirits. The word "ouija" is a combination of the French and German words, which stand for the answer "yes".
The board's mechanism concists of a flat piece of wood, with all the letters of the Alphabet displayed (sometimes the numbers 0-9). The other part of the mechanism is a simple "pointer" which is used to spell out words; the pointer, or planchette, may be made of glass, plastic or wood.
The device is employed when two or more people sit around it, with their fingers lightly places upon the planchette and then ask questions aloud. The idea, is that a "spirit" uses the collective psychic energy of the individuals, so move the planchette.
